Visakhapatnam: Women tend to be better drivers than men in many parts of Andhra Pradesh, reveal reports by the ministry of road transport and highways. The number of deaths of women drivers in road accidents is very low in the state in comparison to male drivers.
The ministry of road transport and highways report said that a total of 14,217 drivers were killed in road accidents in Andhra Pradesh between 2019 and 2022, of which only 462 were women drivers, which is less than four per cent of the total drivers who died in the state during the period.
A senior police officer with the traffic wing in Vizag city said they have been observing that women motorists are more cautious on roads and do not take any major risks unlike their male counterparts.
“We have observed that over 90 per cent of the women motorists have been wearing head-guard and seatbelt while driving on the city roads,” he added.
The road accidents data revealed that the number of women drivers killed in road crashes in the state have increased from 97 in 2019 to 154 in 2022, which is an increase by over 58 per cent.
“Though there was no proper data on road crashes by drivers based on gender, males accounted for around 90 per cent of the road crashes, deaths, and casualties in the state while women accounted for less than 10 percent,” the Road Transport Authority (RTA) personnel added.
Higher rates of road crashes by men could be influenced by the difference in driving behaviour between men and women. Men are reportedly more negligent while driving and often overspeed while women drivers are more likely to drive at lower speed and overtake vehicles on the roads more carefully.
Moreover, the number of women motorists is less than male motorists in the state. While male drivers are more skilled and perform difficult manoeuvres, they are more likely to risk driving under the influence of alcohol. This is one of the few other reasons that count, the police added.
While sticking to the traffic norms such as obeying road signs, driving the vehicle at specified speed limits, following the road markings and traffic lights, was a major problem for men, women suffered from control issues while steering and reverse parking. Overall, women follow road rules better than men while driving. Tipsy driving among the women motorists is negligible in the state, the cops added.
