She left Tesla in 2016 and joined Leap Motion, a company that develops motion-sensing technology for virtual and augmented reality.
In 2018, Murati joined OpenAI as the VP of Applied AI and Partnerships, where she was responsible for commercializing OpenAI’s products and improving them through human feedback. She also served on the leadership teams that developed ChatGPT, Dall-E, and Codex, some of the most advanced and innovative AI systems in the world. ChatGPT is a chatbot that can generate natural and coherent texts on any topic, based on a large corpus of web data. Dall-E is a system that can create images from text descriptions, such as “a cat wearing a bow tie”. Codex is a system that can generate computer code from natural language commands, such as “create a website with a blue background”.
In May 2022, Murati was promoted to CTO of OpenAI, overseeing the company’s research, product and safety teams. She became the interim CEO of OpenAI in November 2023, after the board of directors fired Sam Altman, the previous CEO, due to a loss of confidence in his ability to lead the organization. Murati is the first woman and the first person of Albanian origin to hold the top position at OpenAI.
Murati said she was “honored and humbled” to step into the leadership role at the company. “We are now at a crucial juncture where our tools are being widely adopted, developers are actively building on our platforms, and policymakers are deliberating on the best ways to regulate these systems,” Murati wrote in the memo. “This is welcome progress and an opportunity to participate in a future where AI is built and used for good.”
