MUMBAI: The city crime branch on Monday arrested a 21-year-old man for allegedly murdering his live-in partner, stuffing her body in a suitcase and dumping it near a construction site on CST-LBS Marg in Kurla on Sunday.
Officials of units XI and unit V apprehended Askar Manoj Barla, a native of Odisha, from Thane station just as he was about to board a train to his hometown.
The deceased was identified as Pratima Kispatta (25), also a native of Odisha.
“Our first priority was to identify the deceased. We circulated her photograph on various channels and her sister identified her and contacted us,” said Raj Tilak Roushan, deputy commissioner of police (crime). During investigations, police found that Kispatta used to work with a housekeeping firm, but had lost her job two months ago. They also learnt that she was living with Barla, who works in a sweet shop, in Dharavi. Police went to their residence, but he was missing. They then scanned the CCTV footage of the area and tracked his mobile phone and found that he was at Thane station.
Police said the duo got acquainted with each other while returning to Odisha from Mumbai during the Covid-19 lockdown. They returned to Mumbai in July and started living together in Dharavi.
Police said Barla suspected Kispatta of having an affair and they often had arguments on this issue. During interrogation, police claimed, Barla said in the wee hours of Sunday, they had an argument and in a fit of rage, he strangled her. He then put her body in a suitcase, hired an autorickshaw from Sion and dumped it on CST-LBS Marg and returned home. “The accused had planned to place the suitcase in an outstation train at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, but developed cold feet and dumped it on the road,” said Ghanshyam Nair, senior police inspector, crime branch unit V.
