UTTARKASHI: Awaiting the rescue of his son trapped inside the collapsed tunnel in Silkyara for two weeks, a distressed Chaudhary declared on Sunday, “Once he comes out, we will never allow him to work here again.”

Having already lost another son in a Mumbai accident, the farm laborer from Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh, is enduring the painful uncertainty of waiting for the safe return of his only remaining son.
Manjeet, 22, is one of the 41 workers caught inside the collapsed tunnel on Uttarakhand’s Char Dham route since the landslide on November 12.

Chaudhary, who arrived a day after the incident, communicated with Manjeet on Sunday through a channel established by the authorities. Despite the slow progress in the rescue efforts, he expressed relief that his son appeared to be in good health. “I am a bit stressed due to the delay in the rescue work. Today I told him this is a war, but he should not be scared. We will succeed soon,” Chaudhary said.
Facing financial hardships, the family took a loan of Rs 9,000 against his wife’s jewelry to reach the site. The administration provided assistance, including a jacket and shoes, and repaid their loan. A camp for the relatives of trapped workers has been set up outside the tunnel, allowing daily communication through a system facilitated by a six-inch wide pipe.

The rescue operation faced setbacks when the auger machine malfunctioned on Friday during drilling to create an escape passage. A plasma cutter from Hyderabad is being used to address the issue, and vertical drilling equipment is also in place for the rescue efforts.
