MUMBAI: A 19-year-old college student from Telangana has been arrested for allegedly sending a series of threat e-mails to Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani demanding ransom.

The individual, identified as Ganesh R Vanpardhi, hailing from Telangana, was located by the Gamdevi police with the help of technical surveillance and subsequently taken to Mumbai on Saturday.

Vanpardhi was presented before the court, and his custody has been extended until November 8.
“Vanpardhi is a student. The police are currently interrogating him to discern the underlying motive for his actions in sending multiple death threat e-mails between October 27 and November 1,” said a police officer.

“We are inquiring about his utilization of the Virtual Private Network (VPN) and whether he received any assistance in this regard. The accused employed the VPN network to send the emails, which were initially traced back to Belgium. All of the mails were sent from a single email ID and contained ransom demands,” police said.
The emails were sent using the same alias, “Shadab Khan,” and police are currently working to determine when Vanpardhi created the email ID, which he employed for sending these ominous messages.
In the beginning, the accused demanded a ransom of Rs 20 crore, which was subsequently raised to Rs 40 crore.
Later, more threatening emails were received, cautioning Mukesh Ambani about dire consequences if his earlier emails were ignored and demanding a sum of Rs 400 crore, according to the police.
Upon receiving a complaint from Ambani’s security in-charge, Devendra Munsiram, the Gamdevi police initiated a case under the Indian Penal Code sections related to extortion and criminal intimidation against the individual responsible for sending these ransom threats.
