MUMBAI: Roughly eight crore Indians – including one crore in the 5-19 years age group – are obese, according to an analytical report published in reputed medical journal ‘The Lancet’.
Conducted by NCD Risk Factor Collaboration, the analysis, released ahead of World Obesity Day on March 4, showed that 1 billion people – or one out of eight in the world – live with obesity.
Obesity is only one component of malnutrition, with underweight or thinness being the other. Both these forms of malnutrition affect organs such as the heart and liver and increase the risk of various diseases. The report looked at both these aspects of malnutrition and found that though India is among the leading countries for thinness/undernutrition, the rate of obesity has been growing fast between 1990 and 2022.
For instance, the percentage of underweight women in India dropped by roughly 30% between 1990 and 2022 to affect 6.1 crore and 5.8 crore, respectively. Meanwhile obesity, in the same period, grew by 9% among women (4.4 crore) and 5% among men (2.6 crore). In the 5-19 age group, 0.7 crore (70 lakh) boys and 0.5 crore (50 lakh) girls were obese.
According to the report, global data analysis estimates that among the world’s children and adolescents, the rate of obesity in 2022 was four times the rate in 1990.
