Cybercrime police in Coimbatore have arrested a 58-year-old man from Maharashtra on the charge of cheating an ex-soldier from the city.
Sithiraipazham Raja, a native of Tamil Nadu residing in Pimpalgaon Baswant in Nashik district of Maharashtra, was arrested for duping Gabriel Anthony, 55, of Podanur in the city, of ₹15 lakh.
According to the cybercrime police, Mr. Anthony served in the Indian Army for 12 years, after which he opened a firm offering security services. He developed an interest in onion trading and began gathering information from several platforms, including YouTube.
According to the complaint filed by Mr. Anthony, he found a video on a YouTube channel where Sithiraipazham Raja was explaining the onion trade. After watching the video, Mr. Anthony called the mobile number provided in it and spoke to someone who identified himself as Sithiraipazham Raja. The individual assured Mr. Anthony that he could purchase onions at wholesale prices through MRC Trading Corporation.
Trusting the offer, Mr. Anthony transferred ₹15 lakh for the promised consignments. However, the trader later did not respond to Mr. Anthony’s calls, following which he lodged a complaint with the police.
The cybercrime police team arrested Sithiraipazham Raja on Wednesday for offences under Sections 420 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and 66D of the Information Technology (Amendment) Act.
