SHAHDOL: In the Shahdol district of Madhya Pradesh, a local revenue department official, known as a patwari, lost his life after being run over by a tractor-trolley engaged in the illegal transportation of sand.
The incident occurred around midnight on Saturday when a patrolling team, including patwari Prasann Singh, intercepted the unauthorized sand-laden vehicle near the Son River in the Gopalpur area.
As Singh attempted to halt the tractor-trolley, the driver deliberately ran him over, resulting in Singh’s immediate death. The accused driver fled the scene with the vehicle. Shahdol’s Superintendent of Police, Kumar Prateek, stated that an investigation was promptly initiated, leading to the identification and subsequent arrest of the driver, Shubham Vishwakarma (25), on Sunday morning.
A case under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been filed against Vishwakarma, a resident of Maihar district located approximately 8 km from the crime scene. The seized tractor has been linked to its owner.
District collector Vandana Vaidya revealed that the incident occurred despite recent efforts to address illegal sand mining in the area. A joint team comprising officials from the revenue, mining departments, and the police had conducted inspections on November 23, seizing illegally mined sand in the process. The collector noted that the tragedy unfolded when Singh and his colleagues revisited the site later to assess the situation.
