NEW DELHI: As talks between Centre and agitating farmers of Punjab and Haryana resumed, govt sources on Thursday shared data which showed farmers from both the states benefited immensely from increased procurement of paddy and wheat at minimum support price (MSP) as well as from multiple farm schemes during the last 10 years under NDA compared to the previous 10-year-period when UPA was in power.
Data compiled by different ministries shows that total procurement of paddy in Punjab in 10 years of UPA (2004-05 to 2013-14) was 1,263 lakh metric tonne (LMT) which went up to a total of 1,686 LMT procured during the NDA govt (2014-15 to 2023-24), showing a decadal rise of over 33% during the period benefitting around 94 lakh farmers in the state.
In case of wheat, the other major crop, the total quantity procured in the same period in Punjab increased from 975 LMT to 1,176 LMT (as on Feb 1, 2024), recording a rise of over 20% and benefitting nearly 70 lakh farmers. In value terms, paddy recorded 157% increase whereas wheat recorded 110% during the period in the state.
Data for Haryana also throws up a similar picture as total paddy procurement increased from 284 LMT paddy during UPA govt (2004-05 to 2013-14) to 539 LMT during the NDA period (2014-15 to 2023-24). “In case of wheat during this period, the quantity procured increased from 552 LMT to 719 LMT (as on Feb 1, 2024),” said the note shared by officials.
Compilation of comparative figures released by govt sources is an attempt to send a message to agitating farmers from both the states, that the NDA govt consistently increased MSP and procurement to ensure benefits to the producers.
Traditionally, Punjab and Haryana have accounted for the bulk of procurement in the country, also driven by the efforts of the govts in the two states.
