Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has termed AI as the most ‘destructive force’ ever. In an interview with UK prime minister Rishi Sunak, discussed a range of issues related to AI and some politics. The world’s richest man painted a grim picture of things, if let loose.
There will come a time where no job is needed as AI will be the “most disruptive force in history”, he told Sunak during the wide-ranging conversation.
AI will be smarter than the smartest human, said Musk. “We are seeing the most destructive force in history here. You can have a job if you want one for personal satisfaction but AI will do everything,” he added. There will be no jobs in the future, he predicted: AI will take them all. “One of the challenges of the future will be how do we find meaning in life,” he said.
He said that there is a safety concern, especially with humanoid robots. “At least a car can’t chase you into a building or up a tree,” he told the audience. Musk reportedly told fellow attendees that governments should not rush to roll out AI legislation. Instead, he suggested companies using the technology were better placed to uncover problems, and they could share their findings with lawmakers responsible for writing new laws.
The UK hosted the world’s first AI Safety Summit. The two-day summit (November 1-2) brought together around 100 politicians, academics and tech executives to plot a way forward for a technology that could transform the way companies, societies and economies operate, with some hoping to establish an independent body to provide global oversight.
Microsoft-backed OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, Microsoft, Meta and xAI attended sessions at the summit, alongside leaders including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, US Vice President Kamala Harris and UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
