BAREILY: An MP/MLA court in Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur district on Wednesday convicted senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, his wife Tazeen Fatima and son Abdullah Azam in a 2019 fake birth certificate case, and gave them a 7-year jail term. Special judge MP/MLA court Shobhit Bansal also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on them.
The trio was taken into judicial custody and sent to jail.
The SP leader said there is a difference between judgment and justice. He said, “Whatever was delivered today was judgment, not justice. The entire city knew the quantum of punishment even yesterday and many channels had broadcast it. This is just a decision.”
In the FIR by BJP MLA Akash Saxena, it was alleged that Khan and his wife helped their son obtain two fake birth certificates: one from Lucknow and another from Rampur.
Abdullah’s membership was revoked after it was found he had forged his age in the 2017 state polls. He managed to win from Suar constituency in 2022, but his membership was cancelled after he was convicted in a criminal case in Moradabad.
Judge Bansal said: “Azam Khan obtained a fake birth certificate from Lucknow with the intention of securing a legislative seat for his son. At that time, he was a state minister, and had a responsibility not to indulge in fraudulent activity.”
