AHMEDABAD: Two individuals, allegedly impersonating Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) officials, reportedly abducted and robbed a man from Gujarat who had smuggled two gold capsules worth Rs 50 lakh into India from Dubai, as per the police on Saturday.
The complainant, Danish Sheikh, disclosed that he traveled to Dubai on October 9 at the request of an acquaintance in Vadodara, who provided tickets and accommodation, paying him Rs 20,000 for smuggling gold, concealed in his rectum, back into the country.
Upon landing at Ahmedabad airport on October 28, Sheikh completed immigration formalities and headed to the airport’s parking lot, where a van sent by his Vadodara acquaintance awaited. As he was about to board the van, two men claiming to be ATS officials approached, asserting knowledge of the smuggled gold. They coerced Sheikh to accompany them to the ATS office.
The accused, driving the van with Sheikh and the other two occupants, diverted to an isolated location. There, they instructed Sheikh to transfer to a car, leaving the others behind. The car took him to a high-rise building, where he was assaulted on the 10th floor. Forced to retrieve the concealed gold capsules, weighing 850 gm and valued at Rs 50 lakh, Sheikh was also relieved of some cash. Subsequently, he was transported to a bus station in an autorickshaw and left there.
An FIR has been filed against unidentified individuals under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including voluntarily causing hurt during robbery, abduction, criminal intimidation, and personating a public servant. The delay in reporting the incident was attributed to the complainant’s fear, and investigations are ongoing, stated Police Sub-Inspector R H Pandav.
