PATNA: In a lovely initiative, the Bihar prison department is soon to start “Jail Radio” on the lines of FM Radio in all the jails across the state to motivate prisoners lodged there and turn them away from the world of crime.
Through Jail Radio, the prisoners will be played a variety of soft music every day and will also be treated with motivational speeches at regular intervals which, the prison authorities believe, will ultimately reform the gangsters, murderers, rapists and other hardened criminals.
Jail authorities said currently more than 53,000 prisoners are lodged in various jails across the state and the initiative could work wonders in days to come.
They said state jails have a large number of prisoners convicted for murders, rape, robbery and other such heinous crimes, and the idea is aimed at ending the jail monotony and soften their hardened attitude.
“We will be starting the ‘Jail Radio’ in all the district and central jails across the state soon through which the prisoners will be treated with melodious songs related to devotion and patriotism every day. They will also be getting regular doses of motivational speeches,” prison welfare officer BK Prabhakar told TOI on Wednesday.
He said they were installing speakers in all jail wards so that the prisoners could listen to the programmes properly and take advantage of them.
What’s special about this idea is that it is the prisoners themselves who will play the Radio Jockeys.
However, the prisoners willing for this position must have a good voice and command over language.
They will function under the guidance of jail officials.
To ensure the programme is aired properly, control rooms will be set up in jails.
Apart from treating prisoners with a variety of music, the Jail Radio will also regularly inform the prisoners about the schemes being run by the government for their welfare after their release from jails.
According to a latest report of the Prison department, currently a total of 53,826 prisoners including 1,982 female inmates are lodged in 59 jails across the state.
What, though, remains a matter of serious concern is that a good number of state jails are heavily overcrowded with quite many jails having prisoners more than 200 percent of the required strength while a sub-jail in Patna city has prisoners more than 516 per cent of its required capacity of housing only 37 prisoners.
As per the official statistics, 350 per cent more prisoners are lodged in district jail, Madhepura while 200 percent more prisoners are lodged in four other jails in Danapur, Barh (in Patna district), Chhapra and Sitamarhi districts.
Again, more than 150 per cent prisoners are lodged in seven jails while over 100 per cent prisoners are lodged in eight jails.
Officials said the total capacity of state prisons is housing 49,019 prisoners against which 53,826 prisoners are currently lodged there.
