JAMMU: A day after Parliament granted Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahari community, authorities on Wednesday imposed strict restrictions on internet and gatherings in the twin frontier districts of Poonch and Rajouri. Curbs were also put in place in Jammu district on posting and sharing content affecting communal harmony under CrPC Section 144.
The Gujjar/Bakarwal community — which so far enjoyed the ST status in J&K with 9% reservation in govt jobs — has opposed the move, claiming that Paharis are a well-settled community in the Union Territory (UT) and granting them the ST tag would cut into their reservations, despite Union home minister Amit Shah’s assurances otherwise. Besides Paharis, Parliament has also conferred ST status to the Padari and Koli tribes as well as Gaddi Brahmins of the UT.
ADGP Jammu issued directions to telecom/internet service providers to suspend internet (2G/3G/4G/5G and public Wi-Fi facilities 5G) in Poonch and Rajouri till 11.30pm Wednesday, under the Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017, in apprehension of these services being misused by anti-national elements/miscreants leading to deterioration of public order.
Jammu deputy commissioner Sachin Kumar Vaishya, in a similar order, imposed restrictions on posting/sharing communally sensitive/derogatory/discriminatory/provocative content and spreading disinformation on social media and news portals. Violation of the same would lead to punitive action under IPC section 188 (deliberate disobedience of an order that is duly promulgated by a public servant empowered by law to do so).
