NEW DELHI/IMPHAL: Officials on Friday reported that a group of 10 individuals robbed a bank in Manipur’s Ukhrul district at gunpoint, making away with a total of Rs 18.80 crore in cash.
They mentioned that the Viewland branch of Punjab National Bank in Ukhrul town serves as the currency chest for the district.
This is the designated location where the Reserve Bank of India stores cash intended for distribution to other banks and ATMs.
Around 5:40 pm on Thursday, a group of 10 men, their faces concealed with masks, arrived at the branch located approximately 80 km from the state capital Imphal.
Notably, some of these individuals were dressed in camouflage attire and armed with sophisticated weapons, according to reports.
“They entered the bank not through the main entrance, but the door used by staff,” PTI quoted superintendent of police Ningshem Vashum as telling PTI.
Subsequently, the group proceeded to confine both bank employees and security personnel within a washroom, securing the area.
Under threat of firearms, they compelled one of the employees to unlock the cash vault.
Following this, the perpetrators made their escape with the stolen money, as reported by officials.
“We are analysing the CCTV footage. The suspects are yet to be identified,” the SP said.
