RAIPUR: Maoists in the insurgency-hit Bijapur district have issued a warning to polling parties, urging them not to visit areas affected by Maoist activities in the company of security forces, as it poses a life-threatening risk.
The Maoists have also called for a boycott of elections in villages situated in Sukma, Narayanpur, Kanker, and other insurgency-affected regions.Messages advocating the boycott have been painted on walls in these villages.
Bijapur is set to hold elections on November 7, representing the first phase of assembly elections among the 20 seats with 245 polling stations and 169,211 voters.
In a statement addressed to electoral officers and polling party personnel, Maoist secretary Mohan of the western Bastar division committee has issued a stern warning. As the elections are scheduled on November 7, the Maoists have called for a poll boycott through posters, banners, and statements.
The statement reads, “You will be coming here in Bijapur to carry out polling practices at 245 polling stations. As you will be accompanied by security forces, there is a palpable threat to your lives. Given that you will be visiting Maoist-affected regions, we urge you not to visit this area, with your safety in mind.”
In another incident, a CoBRA personnel was injured in an IED blast triggered by Naxals in the forests of Chintagufa and Tadmetla. The injured individual is currently receiving treatment at a district hospital for splinter injuries to the legs.
