Conference on Battery and Critical Minerals Ecosystem

Conference on Battery and Critical Minerals Ecosystem

The Embassy hosted “Conference on Battery and Critical Minerals Ecosystem” in New Delhi, India on July 2nd, 2025. The event was jointly organized by the Japanese Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO).

The growing importance of stationery and EV batteries for achieving carbon neutrality is undeniable. However, both Japan and India face a significant challenge: heavy reliance on specific countries for battery cells, related materials, and mineral resources. While India is experiencing a surge in investment for battery cell manufacturing, diversifying and strengthening the supply chain to reduce this dependence is crucial. Building a resilient battery-related industrial ecosystem – encompassing raw materials, manufacturing equipment, recycling, critical minerals, and battery users – is a pressing issue.

To address this, the conference facilitated a roundtable discussion for government and private sector stakeholders to promote investment and exchange information on ecosystem development. One-on-one business matching sessions between Japanese and Indian companies were also held to foster collaboration.

This event aligns with Japan’s ongoing efforts to strengthen resilient and inclusive supply chains. As the G7 president in 2023, Japan led discussions on strengthening supply chains for clean energy products, including solar panels and batteries. Specifically, Japan, in collaboration with partner countries and the World Bank, contributed to the launch of the “Resilient and Inclusive Supply-chain Enhancement (RISE)” initiative, aiming to empower low- and middle-income countries in the Global South to play a greater role in the midstream (refining and processing of critical minerals) and downstream (component manufacturing and assembly) segments.

Over 70 companies, including 33 member companies of the Battery Association for Supply Chain, and more than 200 participants attended the event, engaging in discussions and business matching. This initiative is expected to significantly promote collaboration between Japanese and Indian companies, contributing to the diversification and resilience of supply chains – a common challenge for both nations.
