MUMBAI: After a 10-day chase from Mumbai to Nashik to Uttar Pradesh to Uttarakhand, a 27-year-old college dropout was finally arrested, on Thursday, 100km away from Dehradun in the 151kg mephedrone drug haul case that the Saki Naka police busted on October 6.
Harish Pant is the 18th accused arrested in the Rs 305 crore drug bust at the Shree Ganeshay Pharmaceuticals unit at Nashik which manufactured drugs.
Pant is known by his alias “Doctor” because of his knowledge of manufacturing drugs. During the probe, the Sakinaka police learnt that he had helped the drug racketeer Lalit Patil and his brother Bhushan to set up the machinery to manufacture the drugs.
“It is also learned that Pant has helped many to set up machinery at different places in MMR region, Nashik and Pune,” said a police officer of the Saki Naka police station.
Pant came in contact with the arrested drug racketeer Lalit Patil in 2018 after he was arrested in an NDPS case in Nashik. Pant was in his first year of BSc chemistry when he was first held.
Joint commissioner of police (Law & Order) Satyanarayan Chaudhary confirmed TOI about Pant’s (who did not complete his BSc Chemistry) arrest. “A total of 18 people have been arrested ever since the first arrest was made on August 8 which started with a 10 grams seizure. The mission is to eliminate drugs sold in the city,” said Chaudhary.
Police team—DCP (Zone X) Datta Nalawade and his team came across a dairy from one of the arrested accused Shivaji Shinde (supplier of raw materials) in which the entire details of suppliers’ chain was mentioned.
“The diary is one of the sources that helped in tracking the supply chain and the person involved in the entire drug manufacturing. We have also seized a rent agreement document, from Shinde’s home, of the Nashik unit where Patil manufactured the drugs,” said the police.
A day prior to Pant’s arrest, the police arrested Amir Shaikh who is the main distributor of the drugs in the MMR region. Meanwhile, a police team that visited Nashik this week seized 12.7kg of drugs that one of the arrested accused Sachin Wagh (30) had hidden in a forest in Nashik’s Yeola locality and had planned to sell it later after his release.
On Friday, the Saki Naka produced Lalit Patil, Shaikh, and Pant before the Andheri court and they were remanded in police custody till October 30. Meanwhile, the police are awaiting to get custody of Lalit Patil’s brother Bhushan who is in Pune police custody.
