NEW DELHI/AKOLA: A 29-year-old individual with a history of criminal activities has been apprehended following allegations of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl, burning her with cigarette butts, and forcibly shaving her head in Akola city, Maharashtra.
The accused, identified as Ganesh Kumre, has reportedly been tormenting the girl for the past two years, according to police sources.
“Kumre is a local goon in Khadan area. He sexually assaulted the girl on November 15 and 16, tortured her with cigarette butts and also cut her hair,” PTI quoted the officer as saying quoting the First Information Report.
Responding to the heinous crime, deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, responsible for the home portfolio, has pledged to take stringent action.
Addressing reporters in Nagpur on Monday, he asserted that those responsible for the crime will face consequences, emphasizing that orders have been issued to initiate a thorough investigation into the incident.
As per the Akola Police, the father of the victim is employed as a laborer.
“Kumre has a criminal background. He has been harassing the girl for the last two years,” the official said.
Significantly, the incident of sexual assault came to public attention after November 16 when local residents reported the matter to the police, implicating Kumre.
A case has been filed under various sections, including 363 (Punishment for kidnapping), 376 (Punishment for rape), 354 (Assault or criminal force to a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty), and charges related to causing harm with dangerous weapons, among others, of the Indian Penal Code. Additionally, provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act have also been invoked, as confirmed by a police official.
Kumre was apprehended on November 18 and has been placed in police custody until November 21, as confirmed by the authorities.
Further investigation is underway.
